We are saddened to report the passing of member Richard Bailie on Tuesday, May 14th, from complications of cancer. Richard loved Stumptown Stomp and was hoping to make it to one last one, but cancer spread to his brain and took him quickly. We will miss his sweet smile and gentle soul. Richard was a member of the Board of Directors and was Chair of this year’s Stumptown Stomp. These are his words about his feelings about the club:
“I can't think of any group of people I'd rather be around than the members of Capital City Squares. Every member in it I consider a friend and have made even more going to dances sponsored by other groups or by us. I am honored to be a member of the board and be of service to the club.”
Donations in Richard’s name can be made to the Lizz Bippus Scholarship Fund for Stumptown Stomp (see below). Dancers at this year’s Stumptown Stomp passed the hat and collected $237 for the scholarship in Richard’s name.
Capital City Squares is pleased to announce the creation of the Lizz Bippus Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was unveiled at Stumptown Stomp this year. Created by Lizz’s co-worker and CCS member, Anne Fenkner, with matching funding from Anne’s employer, the Davey Tree Expert Company, the funds will provide scholarships to Stumptown Stomp for dancers who might not be able to afford it. To donate, send a check to Capital City Squares, PO Box 19986, Sacramento, CA 95819. OR, if you need your donation to be tax-deductible, make out the check to All Join Hands Foundation, and mail to All Join Hands, 2811 W Pollack Street, Phoenix, AZ 85041. Be sure to note that the donation is for the Lizz Bippus Fund at Capital City Squares. (All Join Hands is the 501(c)3 organization that supports the International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs and its member clubs.)
To apply for a scholarship, send a note of interest (for yourself or someone else) to the CCS Board of Directors. Members of all gay clubs can apply, but CCS members will get priority. All applications are confidential, and no embarrassing questions will be asked.
Lizz Bippus was a member of CCS from the fall of 1997 until her untimely death from ovarian cancer in May, 2011 at the age of 58. Lizz worked with Anne at the Sacramento Tree Foundation for many years and was responsible for the planting of many thousands of trees, with school children, neighborhood groups, and individual homeowners. Lizz liked to have fun wherever she went, and the Tree Foundation made her their “Chairman of Fun”, so that she would have an official position from which to spread her good cheer. By far, Lizz’s favorite square dance event was Stumptown Stomp, so it is very appropriate for Anne to select this activity for the scholarship, so that many more can enjoy the fun as Lizz did.
