CCS will hold its next beginning class on Wednesday nights starting April 17, 2024 and continuing for 12 weeks. Classes will start promptly at 7:30 PM and continue until 9:00 PM.

More about the class:

  1. What will I learn in this class?
In this class, you’ll learn the basics of Modern Western Square Dancing. By the end of the class, you’ll be able to dance the popular SSD level.

  2. What’s “SSD”?
SSD (“Social Square Dancing” is a halfway point to full-level square dancing. SSD-level dances are held throughout the year. At IAGSDC (LGBTQ+) Conventions, all of the fun specialty events (Bear Tip, Women’s Tip, Fun Badge Tour, etc.) are called at SSD level now.

  3. How much is the class?
The cost for the class is $75.00, which includes classes, club membership, and unlimited club night dancing through the end of the class year.

  4. Will I be a member of Capital City Squares when I finish the class?
Yes, you’ll be a full member of Capital City Squares when you have successfully completed the SSD class. Member dues for the current year are included in your class fee. This includes unlimited club night dancing for the remainder of the year.

  5. Who’s teaching?
Classes will be taught by our club caller, Allan Hurst. He will be assisted by experienced dancers, called "angels", who will pair up with students to help ensure a fun and successful class.

  6. I don't have someone to dance with!
In LGBTQ+ square dancing, you don't need to bring a dance partner. Just bring yourself and a smile. We'll pair you up with angels and other students so you'll get to dance with different folks in every tip! (A "tip" is a roughly 15 minute dance set.)

  7. But I want to dance with someone specific?!
For purposes of learning, we strongly suggest that students pair up with an angel whenever possible. However, if you prefer to dance with the same person repeatedly, that’s OK, too.

  8. What about food?
We generally provide light snacks and water. Feel free to bring snacks to share if you like.

  9. How should I dress?
There's no “dress code” in LGBTQ+ square dancing. Traditional square dance clothing is not required.

Instead, like other LGBTQ+ clubs, we focus on comfort.

Dress in loose clothing that allows you to move around easily and comfortably. Wear sensible shoes that are comfortable for standing and walking. Some folks like to wear especially thick socks for dance classes, to cushion the feet. Jeans and t-shirts are just fine, as are sweats, skirts, shorts, and slacks. Please, no strong fragrances.

  10. Where do I go from here?
Classes will be held periodically to take SSD dancers to Plus level, which is the dance level for many California clubs.

90 minutes of each CCS club night are dedicated to SSD, while the remaining time is dedicated to Plus (and sometimes a little Advanced).
